In a place as vast and wild as Western Canada’s province of British Columbia, you can imagine that here you will find some stunning scenery and the best alpine hiking to be found anywhere in the region. At Yoho Adventures , we’re particularly interested in hiking remote wilderness, getting as close to the clouds and as high up above the forests and bushy scrubs that largely dominate most of the hiking terrain in British Columbia. Our British Columbia adventure vacations allow hikers to experience a truly unique hiking holiday by stepping away from formed trails, and onto what we call wilderness travel. It’s backcountry and finding a great route for trekking in the Coast Mountain wilderness is what we do when we take our guests for the best alpine hiking experience in BC.
Unfortunately as beautiful as BC really is, it is easy to be stumped from seeing the big open vistas and grand views by the massive amounts of thick forests and trees encountered getting into the alpine. At Yoho Adventures, we seek out the immense beauty and open views by hiking out of the dark woods that loom over the lower elevations, and we aim for the sub alpine to alpine terrain where inspiration and breathtaking views of the mountains await us. After years of hiking and exploring some of the most remotest areas, we’ve been continually winded by the breathtaking, dramatic scenery and immense natural beauty here and have made it the staging ground for our Guided Hiking Tours in British Columbia. This dramatic perspective really helps our guests get a full sense of their journey before we begin to explore the wilderness. We can think of no better way to honor nature than to view it in all its creative majesty.
The land offers an area of open vistas and sub alpine environment which opens up into alpine terrain offering nothing short of majestic mountains, grandiose glaciers, ice fields, pristine streams, alpine flowers and an abundance of wildlife viewing opportunities. The best alpine hiking in BC gives us the opportunity to set off day hiking from our cabin base with ease as we travel light with day packs and hike through stunning valleys nestled between peaks. Countless glacial-fed lakes feed nearby trickling streams that attract wild caribou. Tracks can be seen as we explore this open wildlife playground and choose our best hiking route for exploring this pristine Canadian wilderness.
Soft alpine meadows lead us to more challenging steep terrain where we enjoy a climb up to a nearby ridge line, and then to a summit of one of the non-technical hiking peaks of the Coast Mountains. The options for routes that allow us to take in a variety of alpine hikes in the area is truly endless. It all boils down to how much time and daylight hours we have on a given day, how the weather cooperates that day and how the group is feeling. In general, energy levels tend to elevate while taking in the experience of hiking and spending time around this untouched and untamed part of the West Chilcotin Coast Mountains. This is nature at its finest.
A general layout of a day spent hiking in the alpine on one of our unique Canadian Wilderness Adventure Trips would be to set off after a yummy healthy breakfast and filling up our camel back from a clear pristine glacial fed stream. From here our day of wilderness travel would entail hiking through alpine meadows and up to interesting vantage points at higher elevations along the way to gain different viewpoints of the heavily glaciated mountains such as Monarch Mountain and the impressive Waddington Range, home to some of British Columbia’s highest mountains. Lunch at midday has us enjoying a nice break in the sun near a stream with some delicious fresh produce to create homemade wraps that fuel our bodies for more exploring. Usually after lunch the strong hikers in our group set off to tackle one of the nearby beautiful tall peaks. The summits of these mountain peaks will range between 2200-2700 meters, with an elevation gain of up to 1300-meters along the way. For the hikers who prefer to take in less challenging views, we head back with another guide at a leisurely pace along a different route, all the while having the big responsibility to ensure the wine and beers are well chilled for the return of our fellow peak baggers!
One of the special ingredients on our Canadian hiking tours is true wilderness travel, which literally means hiking off the trails and visiting these wildlife playgrounds. No formed trails exist in the backcountry wilderness where we offer most of our British Columbia hiking tours and that is why we have professional wilderness guides to lead you through the terrain. Usually its the first time for many of our guests to actually walk off of a path, and not be on a trail or have some formed idea of where they are going to be taking their next step. It is why it’s very important to go on a guided wilderness adventure trip with professional guides that know the terrain and environment where you will be hiking, especially in rugged remote areas such as the British Columbia backcountry. The team at Yoho Adventures specializes in remote wilderness areas and is equally passionate about preservation and sharing these truly breathtaking hiking trips in the majestic mountains of the Canadian wilderness with our guests. One of the main goals of Yoho Adventures is to help people understand the pristine wilderness areas of Canada and New Zealand, how rare these areas are in the world, and to nurture a healthy respect for the wild places that most people would not be able to venture into without the help of expert guides.
To experience some of the best alpine hiking trips in BC, you will be taking a step off the trail and embarking on a Canadian wilderness adventure into the true untouched wilds of British Columbia’s Coast Mountains. It’s what we call backcountry wilderness hiking , where guests get a whole new experience of what the best hiking entails , Yoho Adventures style.
